Organised by aquabitArt Gallery, Janine Mackenroth, SALOON Berlin

Works by 21 international SALOON members: Nina Ansari, Sara Benninga, Anna Borgman, Manja Ebert, Zohar Fraiman, Aika Furukawa, Mariella Kerscher, Franziska King, Alex Lebus, Niina Lehtonen Braun, Janine Mackenroth, Markéta Magidová, Nadja Verena Marcin, Lena Oehmsen, Lisa Premke, Mirae kh RHEE, Johanna Smiatek, Adriane Steckhan, Jeanne Susplugas, Ivonne Thein, Gülce Tulçalı
Given the current situation, in which the ratio of female to male artists at Gallery Weekend is around 40% to 60%, while at art colleges the ratio is reversed at 65% female to 35% male, the exhibition PAR(I)TY WITH US raises urgent questions. Is it twice as likely to be exhibited as an artist at Gallery Weekend?
With this exhibition, aquabitArt Gallery will equalize the ratio of male to female artists at this year's Gallery Weekend to 50%/50% by presenting an exhibition consisting exclusively of works by female artists, thus closing the existing gap.

The exhibition “beyond BEYOND” shows works by members of SALOON, an international network for women in the visual arts scene, which now exists in 11 cities worldwide. The eight participating artists come from Hamburg, Dresden, Prague, and Vienna. They have entered into collaborations across city, country, and language boundaries. Working in pairs, they have gone beyond themselves, i.e., “beyond BEYOND.” The pairing of the duos was organized by Dr. Franziska Storch, co-founder aand co-director of SALOON Hamburg.

“Folding, unfolding, barriers to unfolding” is the theme of a group exhibition being held in January by the Carolyn Heinz Gallery in cooperation with SALOON, an international network for women in the art scene. Ten women artists from Berlin, Dresden, and Hamburg will show works on this theme. Personal unfolding, sexual unfolding, spatial unfolding, the unfolding of hope, folds, folding, and rapport, or inhibited unfolding—the exhibition shows diverse facets of a question that is more pressing than ever in the current times. Personal restrictions to contain the coronavirus pandemic are now part of our everyday life. The exhibition entFALTUNG (unfolding) provides a positive counterpoint and shows the possibilities, but also the limits, of unfolding from artistic perspectives. This includes literal unfolding, as in the screen prints by Omani Frei, which show combinations of squares with the same grid of lines. It is the geometric pattern of an unfolded origami crane, which is a lucky charm in Japan. The exhibition also understands unfolding in a figurative sense. Janine Mackenroth has literally translated the English metaphor for hope – silver lining horizon – with a rescue blanket: A silver flag flies as a symbol of hope. Unfolding also involves restriction. Clara Bahlsen addresses this theme with a relief of a brick wall made of wool and green floral foam. Framed like a window, it blocks the view, but is extremely fragile and also bears the color of hope."

SALOON is a group of young women of the art scene from Berlin. Artists, trustees, journalists and scientists. SEXAUER Gallery is particularly happy to present 25 artists from the SALOON for the first time in a large exhibition also titled SALOON during the Gallery Weekend. The name SALOON ironically refers to the Parisian Salon exhibitions of the 19th century as well as to the American saloon of the Wild West, both mostly men’s domains the SALOON women now symbolically make their own.
